SUMMARY:Dr. Gopinatha Rao Memorial Lecture on International Microorganisms Day
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Biosciences\, in collaboration with the Institution’s Innovation Council at SSSIHL\, will host a two-day celebration for International Microorganisms Day on 16 & 17 September 2024 at the Prasanthi Nilayam campus. This event will bring together distinguished experts and participants\, offering an opportunity to dive into the fascinating world of microorganisms through hands-on workshops\, lectures\, and an engaging exhibition. \nThe first day is dedicated to a workshop on microbial handling techniques and biosafety\, allowing participants to gain practical experience in essential microbial practices such as Gram staining\, antibiotic susceptibility testing\, and yeast/fungal culture techniques.  \nThe highlight of the second day will be the esteemed Dr. K Gopinatha Rao Memorial Lecture\, delivered by Prof. V Nagaraja\, an Honorary Professor at IISc\, Bengaluru\, and Former President of JNCASR\, Bengaluru. The event will also feature a special address by the Guest of Honour\, Prof. D Narasimha Rao\, Former Professor at IISc\, and Convener of the Talent Development Centre\, IISc\, Bengaluru. Concluding the celebration will be the exhibition\, “Into the Microbial World\,” offering a visual and interactive exploration of the relationship between humans and microbes through posters and live demonstrations. \nThis annual observance on 17th September commemorates the groundbreaking discovery by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek in 1683 when he first reported the existence of single-celled organisms to the Royal Society of London. Mohan\, one of India’s foremost experts in diabetology\, for an enlightening talk on “Lessons Learned from the Epidemiology of Diabetes in Indians” at the Sai Hira Global Convention Centre\, Prasanthi Nilayam\, at 2 p.m. Monday\, 24 February 2025 \nDr. Mohan is the Chairman and Chief of Diabetology at Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre\, an IDF Centre of Excellence in Diabetes Care\, and Chairman of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation\, Asia’s largest stand-alone diabetes research center. With a vast network of 50 diabetes centers across 8 states and a patient base exceeding 540\,000 registered diabetes cases\, Dr. Mohan has been at the forefront of diabetes care\, research\, and education in India. \nA prolific researcher\, he has authored over 1\,751 papers in peer-reviewed journals\, with more than 215\,000 citations and an h-index of 157. His contributions have placed him among the Top 2% of Scientists in the World\, as ranked by Stanford University\, and among the top 0.1% of global researchers in Type 2 Diabetes (Expertscape). \nIn 2024\, Dr. Mohan was honored with the prestigious Kelly West Award for Outstanding Achievement in Epidemiology by the American Diabetes Association\, delivering the Kelly West Lecture 2024 on “Lessons Learned from the Epidemiology of Diabetes in South Asians.” \nWith a distinguished career spanning decades\, Dr. Mohan has been instrumental in training numerous physicians\, diabetologists\, and healthcare professionals. He has received over 180 prestigious awards\, including the Padma Shri (2012)\, the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award\, and the Dr. Harold Rifkin Distinguished International Service Award by the American Diabetes Association—the first Indian to receive this honor.
