Dwaraka Rani Rao graduated with a B.Sc. in Physics in 1969 and an M.Sc. in Applied Physics in 1971 from the University of Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. She joined the erstwhile Sri Sathya Sai Arts and Science College for Women at Anantapur in the year 1972.
Subsequently, she pursued her Doctoral Program at SSSIHL and received a Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics. She was the Director of the Anantapur Campus from 2007 to 2014. She continues to teach Physics to undergraduate students.
