Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman & Chief Diabetologist, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre (an IDF Centre of Excellence in Diabetes Care); and Director & Chief of Diabetes Research, Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (an ICMR Centre for Advanced Research on Diabetes), has been honoured with the Inaugural EASD Diabetes Global Impact Prize 2025 by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).
Dr. Mohan, also an esteemed Member of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning Public Charitable Trust, is the first person in the world to receive this prestigious award, which was conferred on him at Vienna during the 61st Annual Conference of the EASD. On this occasion, he also delivered the EASD Diabetes Global Impact Prize Lecture, where he was felicitated by leading global experts in diabetes for his lifelong contributions to the field.
The award recognises Dr. Mohan’s extensive and high-impact work in Diabetes healthcare, research, charity, education, training, awareness, and policy—efforts that have transformed lives not only in India but across the world. Among his landmark contributions are:
- Leading the ICMR–INDIAB national study, the largest epidemiological study on diabetes ever conducted.
- Groundbreaking work in monogenic diabetes, precision medicine, nutrition, and diabetes.
- Publishing over 1,100 original articles, with his research attracting 243,000+ citations and an h-index of 169—the highest among medical doctors in India.
- Training thousands of doctors, diabetes educators, and nurse educators globally.
Dr. Mohan has also pioneered impactful models of care, such as the Chunampet Rural Diabetes Prevention Model, lauded by The Lancet for delivering diabetes care and prevention to underserved rural communities. His research in Neonatal Diabetes has enabled hundreds of children in India to switch from insulin to affordable oral medication. Through over 25,000 free diabetes camps, he has improved the lives of millions, treating thousands of patients free of cost—including more than 800 children with type 1 diabetes.
In recognition of his outstanding service, Dr. Mohan has earlier received numerous honours, including the Padma Shri (2012), the Dr. Harold Rifkin Award and the Dr. Kelly West Award from the American Diabetes Association, and election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRS), alongside 21 fellowships and six doctorates.
This historic recognition by EASD marks yet another milestone in Dr. Mohan’s exemplary journey of service, research, and compassion in the fight against diabetes.
