CAS 2022 University Award
Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning (SSSIHL) is the First Indian Higher Education Institution to be conferred the CAS University Award since the inception of the award program in 2016. It is one of the four Universities selected this year by a panel of judges among a competitive field of 43 applicants from around the world for innovative and exemplary ways it prepares students for a career in the property and casualty insurance industry. The other three are Bryant University, Drake University, and the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, all from the USA.

SSSIHL Women Scholar Wins AWSAR Award 2021 For Her Story ‘Cancer- The Nemesis’
Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR) an initiative by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) aims to disseminate Indian research stories among the masses in an easy-to-understand and interesting format to common-man.
The annual AWSAR award, was constituted to encourage Ph.D. Scholars and Post-Doctoral Fellows (PDFs) in Science and Technology (S&T) streams to write popular science articles by participating in a national competition.
The results of the 2021 AWSAR awards were announced at a ceremony that was streamed live on YouTube, Facebook, and India Science websites on National Science Day, 28 February 2022. A panel of eminent science communicators and scientists, constituted by DST, evaluated the entries.
From over 4000+ participants, Ms. Amitananda Dash, Research Scholar from the Department of Chemistry, Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, Anantapur Campus, was selected as one of the top 100 awardees for her popular science story titled “Cancer- The Nemesis”. Her story highlighted the innovative research on cancer being carried out currently in the labs at SSSIHL.
Ms. Amitananda Dash received a Certificate of Appreciation along with prize money of Rs. 10,000/- as part of the award.

SSSIHL Participates in the 3rd AP Higher Education Planning Board Meet
The Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) organized the 3rd Meeting of AP Higher Education Planning Board on the 29 & 30 July 2022 at Anantapur. The Theme for the meet was “Education 4.0 – A Roadmap for a New Era of Higher Education.
Prof. C B Sanjeevi, Vice-Chancellor, Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning had the privilege and opportunity to participate in the event and share the Institutional Best Practices of SSSIHL with Vice-Chancellors from over 30 Universities in the State of Andhra Pradesh who participated in the 2-day event.
Sri Botcha Satyanarayana, Minister of Education, Govt. Of Andhra Pradesh was the Chief Guest and Sri J Shyamala Rao, I.A.S., Principal Secretary, Dept. of Higher Education, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh the Guest of Honor for the meet. The event was presided by Prof. K Hemachandra Reddy, Chairman, APSCHE & Chairman, APHEPB, Andhra Pradesh and had Dr Buddha Chandrashekhar, Chief Coordinating Officer, AICTE, as the key speaker.
2022 CAS Individual Research Grant Awarded to SSSIHL Actuarial Data Science Team
Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning (SSSIHL) appreciates Casualty Actuarial Society for awarding the 2022 Individual Research Grant to the Actuarial Data Science group, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.
The project team is led by Professor Pallav Kumar Baruah and Satya Sai Mudigonda.

About SSSIHL Actuarial Data Science:
SSSIHL is actively involved in actuarial data science research, specifically in the area of fraud detection. It has to its credit about 30 research papers/book chapters, 20 dissertations in non-life actuarial stream and 2 PhDs awarded in the area of actuarial data science. In fact, SSSIHL is one of the first University to award PhD in Actuarial Science in India.
About the Project:
The project is in the area of Insurance Fraud Detection using Actuarial and Data Science techniques. The project commenced on 1st June 2022 and will end by March 2023.

Sri Suryanarayana Murthy Wins the First Prize for His Sitar Recital at Pt. Rupak Kulkarni Flute Academy’s Music Competition 2022
Sri Suryanarayana Murthy, Asst. Lecturer, Sri Sathya Sai Mirpuri College of Music, SSSIHL, won the First prize for his Sitar recital in the above 18 Years category at the Pt. Rupak Kulkarni Flute Academy’s Music Competition 2022.
The online competition was organised in honour of renowned Flutist Pt. Rupak Kulkarni’s Musical journey of 45 years. The academy invited entries for Flute, Sitar and Tabla in two age categories – below and above 18 years. The winners were selected by Flutist Pt. Rupak Kulkarni and Sitar Maestro Pt. Niladri Kumar and then invited to a live ceremony held at the Nehru Centre, Mumbai where they received their prizes from the judges.

Prof. Madhu Kapani Asserts the Role of Mothers in Building a Nation at an International Conference held by GLS University and WILPF Foundation
Prof. Madhu Kapani, Hon. Professor, Dept. of Education, attended a two-day International Conference on ‘Empowering Women – Empowering Humanity’ organized jointly by Gujarat Law Society’s University and Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF- foundation, India Section) on 26-27 March 2022, at Ahmedabad. Invited as chief guest for the Valedictory Session on the 27th March 2022, Prof. Madhu Kapani presented a paper on ‘Redefining Womanhood – Good Mothers are a Nation’s Pride’.
The paper explored the role of several illustrious, noble and brave Indian women, who brought honour and glory to the sacred land by their unflinching adherence to the ideals of dharma, shaping the ethos of the country. Through various anecdotes and examples, the paper emphasized how women with sterling virtues have not just been the very foundation of the nation and its pride upholding the culture of their motherland but also singularly responsible for the blossoming of children of character and thereby shaping them into potential leaders of the nation.
Prof. Madhu Kapani also shared the example of how Mother Easwaramma was instrumental in bringing to life three mammoth projects viz., Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning (Education), Sri Sathya Sai Super-Specialty Hospitals (Health), and Sri Sathya Sai Drinking Water Project (Water) that are offered free to the people. Thus, sharing how in every age it is the goodness and greatness of the mother that has made their sons illustrious exemplars.
The presentation was very well appreciated by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr. B.H. Joshi of GLS University and the audience. Prof. Madhu Kapani was also honored with a Certificate and a memento at the event.
DFNS Research Scholar Ms. Sai Sruthi Shree Recognized at The Chellaram Foundation Diabetes Research Awards 2022
A ‘Special Appreciation Prize’ was awarded to Ms. Sai Sruthi Shree K. K, Doctoral Research Scholar, DFNS, for her presentation under the ‘Basic Science’ category at ‘The Chellaram Foundation Diabetes Research Awards’ held on 4-6 March, during the 6th International Diabetes Summit (Virtual) – 2022.
The paper entitled ‘Designing and evaluation of a low-GI pigmented rice-based vegan gluten-free protein formulation suitable for malnutrition modulated and lean T2-diabetes mellitus’ was co-authored by Prof. N. Srividya, Research Supervisor & Head, DFNS, and Ms. Ashrita C. Haldipur, Research Scholar, DFNS.
In the study, low-GI pigmented rice and plant protein isolates were used as novel ingredients to scientifically design a gluten-free protein formulation. The nutritional analysis revealed the formulation to be a cost-effective dietary supplement suitable for preventing and managing lean T-2 diabetes mellitus.
Organized by the Chellaram’s Diabetes Institute (CDI), Pune, the event hosted best-in-class experts in the field of diabetes from leading national and global diabetes institutions and had over 9000 participants.

Dr. Balaram Khamari’s Agar Art Featured on ‘OMG! Yeh Mera India’, Telecast on History TV18
When science meets art, the outcome could want to make you say OMG!
A few years ago, when Dr. Balaram Khamari brought his love for art into the BioScience lab at SSSIHL, he discovered a new form of expression through a recently popular unusual art form called ‘Agar art‘.
Fascinated with his unusual yet amazing talent, the History TV18 channel has now featured Dr. Balaram and his work on their popular show OMG! Yeh Mera India, which showcases stories of Indians with extraordinary and unique talents. Balaram was featured in episode 7, season 8 of the show that was aired on 7 March 2022.
A student of BioScience from Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, Balaram completed his B.Sc. (Hons) in 2014 and his M.Sc. with a Gold medal in 2016. He later went on to complete his Ph.D. in 2021 under the supervision of Dr. B.E. Pradeep, Associate Professor, Department of Biosciences, Prasanthi Nilayam campus and is currently the Project Coordinator in a BIRAC funded project, AMR Laboratory, Department of Biosciences at the Prasanthi Nilayam campus of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning.
In 2020, Dr. Balaram received 2nd place in the annual Agar art contest organised by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) for his work ‘Microbial Peacock’.
What is Agar art?
Agar is a jelly-like substance made from seaweed. When used as a medium to grow or culture micro-organisms (bacteria, yeast, fungi, or protists) into specific patterns/forms, it is called Agar art and those practicing are known as Agar artists.
Chosen for their colors, the microbes arranged on the Agar plate (canvas) lend their color to the intricate pattern/design as they grow, creating stunning visuals/pictures

Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi Sangeet Samman 2021 conferred on Sri Mahesh Varma
Sri R. Mahesh Varma, Asst. Lecturer, Sri Sathya Sai Mirpuri College of Music, SSSIHL, was conferred the M. S. Subbulakshmi Sangeet Samman 2021 by ReTHINK INDIA Harnarain Kantidevi Musical Research Center at an online ceremony commemorating the 17th Punya Tithi of Bharat Ratna M. S. Subbulakshmi on 11 December 2021.
ReTHINK INDIA Harnarain Kantidevi Musical Research Center invited nominations for the M. S. Subbulakshmi Sangeet Samman 2021 from music faculty across educational institutions in India. Mahesh submitted his vocal rendition (accompanied on Veena by himself) of the popular Carnatic composition “Kurai Onrum Illai” along with a short speech on the topic “Music Education Imparted to Boost Musical Intelligence” for the nomination screening as required and was one of the 20 awardees felicitated by ReTHINK INDIA, for the contours of musical education professed by him as a faculty of Sri Sathya Sai Mirpuri College of Music.

DFNS Alumna Wins a Certificate of Best Performer for Her Paper on the Shelf-life Studies of Quinoa Flour
Ms. Avanthika K, an alumna of the SSSIHL DFNS, Anantapur, received the ‘Certificate of Best Performer’ for her paper titled “Development and Shelf-life Studies of Quinoa Flour Enriched Gluten-free Cookies” presented at the ‘Innovation in Food Processing and Nutritional Sciences’ virtual conference organised by the Department of Food Processing Technology, AMET University, Chennai, on 29 June 2021. The paper was co- authored by Dr. Meera Manikkavachakan, research supervisor & Assistant Professor, DFNS.
Ms. Avanthika completed her M.Sc. in Food and Nutritional Sciences in 2018, and is currently working as a Dietician in the Sri Sathya Sai General Hospital, Puttaparthi. The work presented was part of her M.Sc. project and was carried out under the supervision of Dr. Meera M.
Organised by the Department of Food Processing Technology, Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET), this virtual conference on ‘Innovation in Food Processing and Nutritional Sciences’ was a two-day conference that focused mainly on the Innovations in Food Processing and Technology with an aim to bring together innovative leaders and also research scholars to share and discuss the rapid scientific and technological advances that are transforming the way food is being produced, processed and consumed while exploring new possibilities.
